159th Annual Report 2006 to 2007

July 20, 2007

Dear youth members, parents, and Group Council members:

On behalf of all the voluntary leaders, I am pleased to report that the year ending March 31, 2007 had, again, been a year of pleasing progress.  Below is a highlight of some of our activities and achievements:

ü      Total membership of 189, consisting of 160 youth members, and 29 leaders (including 12 parents).

ü      Again, encouraging personal development among youth members, with nine Cub Scouts achieving the Golden Bauhinia Awards(金紫荊獎章), five Scouts winning the Chief Scout Award(總領袖獎章), and two Venture Scouts gaining the Venture Scout Awards (深資童軍獎章).

ü      This year, four of our Units (Grasshopper, Cub Scout B, Scout, and Rover Scout) have been selected as “Excellent Sectional Units(優異旅團),” one Unit (Grasshoppers) has been judged as a “Best Developed Unit(最佳發展旅團)”, and our Group has been designated as an “Outstanding Group(卓越),” along with only 6% of other Groups in the Region.

ü      Pleasing progress in musical activities, a new initiative, with the formation of a Scout and a Cub Scout popular music bands, and the introduction of bugle training for a number of Cub Scouts.  Though our bands are quite new, they have already been invited to perform at a number of large Scout gatherings, including the Metropolitan Jamboree in December, 2006 and the Association Scout Leaders’ Mess Night in February, 2007

ü      Continued progress in water-based activities, with more Youth Members qualifying in sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, and standard boating.

ü      Participation in the District 40th Anniversary Camp in December, 2006 and the District “Gift of Peace” Carnival in March, 2007.

ü      Services rendered during Hong Kong Alzheimer’s Disease Association (香港老人痴呆症協會) Flag Day, Christian Family Center Charity Walk, District 40th Anniversary Camp and Rally, the Metropolitan Jamboree (大都會大露營), and other Christian Family Center and Scout functions.

ü      Continuation of meaningful exchange activities, with two Youth Members participating in the Hong Kong—Beijing Youth exchange in the summer of 2006, and three Leaders in the District 40th Anniversary Leaders’ UK-Singapore Visit in July, 2006.

ü      Upgrading of leaders’ training, with two more leaders awarded the Wood Badge(木章), the highest training award for leaders; and two leaders receiving the Good Service Award (優良服務獎章).

ü      Continued Leaders’ service outside the Group, with appointments at the district, regional, Association Headquarters, and Asia Pacific Scout Region levels.

Recently, many of you were at the “159th Show”, our successful Gang Show, part of our 40th Group Anniversary celebration, held on July 14th at the Christian Family Centre hall. Judging from the enthusiastic responses from the packed audience, it would be fair to say all enjoyed the evening and appreciated the efforts of the young performers.  This was a true family affair, and ALL our Youth Members and Leaders from all sections contributed as performers and/or workers.

Two years ago we announced the plan to put aside some funds in order to help a few of our Youth Members to attend the 2007 Centenary World Jamboree in England.  I am happy to announce that, with generous support from the Association Headquarters, the Region, the District and our Council members, we will be sending a total of fifteen Youth Members!  Three Leaders will also attend.  We are all excited as this would be the first-time that our Group is sending any Youth Member to a World Jamboree.

Finally, on behalf of the Scout leaders, I would like to congratulate the youth members for their achievements and progress, and thank the parents and the Council members for their devotion and support in the past year! We look forward to working closely with all of you again in the coming year.

Yours in Scouting,

PAUL KUA(柯保羅 ), Group Scout Leader
